This Matryoshka set makes a lovely Christmas or New Year's gift for both adults and children. Each doll is different: Santa Claus (Ded Moroz) is the largest, followed by a Snowman (Snegovik) , Snow Maiden (Snegurochka), a Penguin and a Christmas tree (Elka).

 Splendid traditional Russian matryoshkas (nesting dolls), painted in the historically famous town of Kirov. Early matryoshkas, with their bright colors, first appeared as toys and still serve that purpose today.

They can be used to illustrate basic spacial and mathematical concepts, such as larger and smaller, more and less, counting and simple calculations. In addition, like other dolls, they can take on personalities and act out stories.

Children can learn names of colors and body parts from the carefully painted exteriors. Nowadays, matryoshkas are known throughout the world as symbols of Russian folk art. These dolls are impeccable examples of that age-old tradition.

Russian craftsmen had a long tradition going back to  the beginning of century of creating hand painted Matryoshkas nesting dolls.  After being carved from linden wood, each doll is hand painted by a professional matryoshka artist. Each piece in the set fits into the next larger one, and each doll is coated with 3-5 layers of clear lacquer.
 Matryoshka was awarded a medal at the Paris Exhibition of Applied Arts
as well as many other awards.
