Byte the small systems journal Volume 6 Number 6 June 1981 This 464 page magazine is in good condition with no damage. Articles include one written by Steve Ciarca on building a speech synthesizer. There are two articles on CP/M, an operating system from Digital Research. This OS was a precursor of MS-DOS which was still just a gleam in Bill Gates' eye. Another article describes Xenix, a stripped down version of Unix written when Linus Torvalds was still in elementary school and had never written a computer program. Another article describes a 50 gigabyte database of references made available by Lockheed to dial-up users. This was a milestone in the development of the Internet. It was available 110 hours per week and served users at 300 baud (bps). If you had begun downloading the database in June, 1981 and kept at it, your progress indicator would be approaching 4% complete by the end of 2009. Buy this magazine and read the article to see if Al Gore is mentioned. |
