- Planning to re-fret your guitar, or just polish up your frets? Protect your prized axe, save time, and make the job a lot easier with these nifty and super helpful fingerboard guards pictured below.
Hey there fellow luthiers, guitar players and tinkerers,
If you're ready to re-fret your own guitar, or doing any fret leveling dressing and polishing, do it right. I don't know how else to say it - you need a couple of these.
They are made of durable .010" stainless sheet, with a slot machined in the middle to allow the fret to peek through during all of the sanding and polishing processes.
If you're paying attention, you'll also pick up on another little known secret pro fret leveling trick...
It works great to cut one of them down slightly smaller (see pic) to fit between the higher frets, especially frets 20 - 24 on some electrics. (don't forget to de-burr, re-sand/polish the edges).
I will also tape a couple of them down to the guitar top when working on the fret ends... Notice the deep groove filed in them right next to the fingerboard...that could have been the guitar top!!!
It's good to have at least 3 of these readily at hand: One at full width, one cut down, and one to color the frets with (the permanent marker ink clogs up my sandpaper when I use the same one for sanding).
