These LCD Panels are new, old stock and still have the protective plastic over the display panel.

The display is a 4-line, 20-character display. These displays operate on 5V and use a digital interface. They do require a negative voltage for the contrast adjustment. Putting a trimmer pot between +5V and -5V should do the trick. For the picture I set it up with an adjustable power supply on the contrast control input.

Pinout is standard for this general type of LCD. Two pins are provided to supply the backlight power, and then 14 pins are used for the display control signals. The display can be used in either a 4-bit or an 8-bit control mode.





This picture is taken running the LCD panel with 150 ma of current on the backlight with a 5V source and a 6.8 ohm resistor in series with the 5V supply (it can be brighter with a smaller value of resistor) and using about -3.0V on the contrast adjustment. I used the LCD panel in 4-bit mode and output some test lines of text.

The display has the HD44780 controller IC on it, so nearly any code for LCD panel control will work well. The programming manual (PDF) for the display can be found at Optrex DMCman_full.pdf.
