The History & Traditions Of Marblehead By Samuel Roads, Jr. Press Of N. Allen Lindsey & Co. Marblehead. 1897. 3rd Edition. 595 pages. (3 pounds). Illustrated with 130+ illustrations. This is a very well written town history including: Indian History; First Settlers and Incorporation of the town; Superstitious Beliefs; Contests with the Crown; Slavery in Marblehead; Early Marblehead Regiment; Recruitment for the Continental Army and Various Vessels involved as well as their part in the war; War of 1812 with vessels offered to the government; Opening of the Eastern RR; Shipbuilding; "Gen. Glover" Fire Engines; Great Strike of the Shoemakers; Fishing Industry; Much Information on Fishing Vessels; Civil War with Number of Men in Army & Navy, those Killed & Wounded and the Amount of Money Raised by the Town for War Purposes; Fires in Marblehead and the eventual rebuilding of the Burnt District; After the Civil War, Improvements; History of Marblehead Great Neck; and much more. 6 by 9 inches bound in reddish-brown cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Inside the front cover name and address of previous owner in ink (Howard Colby, Marblehead Neck). Condition: Only fair. The first end page, frontispiece, and title page were laid in when I purchased the book- the pages had been trimmed on the right edge so are smaller than the other pages. I have laid the said pages back in with some glue on edge. Looks a lot better. There is fraying to top and bottom of spine, corners and edges. Many of the tips of the pages have been turned over, causing many heavy creases, many on the verge of tearing. some have small tears. Page 196- 1/2 by 1/2 pice missing left edge; page 286- 1/2 inch tear top edge; pages 365-368 the tips of the bottom corners are missing; I am going to allow for a few other nicks and tears. I went through the book page by page and might have missed a couple. On a few pages there are light check marks in the margins- light pink. $4 Media S&H in the U.S. $5.25 Priority.
