This handsome, antiquarian Barnaby Rudge tells a story of individuals caught up in the mindless violence of the mob. Lord George Gordon's dangerous appeal to old religious prejudices is interwoven with the murder mystery surrounding the father of the simple-minded Barnaby. The discovery of the murderer and his involvement in the riots put Barnaby's life in jeopardy. Culminating in the terrifying destruction of Newgate prison by the rampaging hordes, the descriptions of the riots are among Dickens's most powerful. Written at a time of social unrest in Victorian Britain, Barnaby Rudge explores the relationship between repression and liberation in private and public life. It looks forward to the dark complexities of Dickens's later novels, whose characters also seek refuge from a chaotic and unstable world.
Charles Dickens is probably the greatest novelist England ever produced. His innate comic genius and shrewd depictions of Victorian life -- along with his memorable characters -- have made him beloved by readers the world over. In Dickens' books live some of the most repugnant villains in literature, as well as some of the most likeable (and unlikely) heroes.
THIS BOOK IS IN NEAR FINE + CONDITION
This attractive, antiquarian book remains in excellent condition. It is clean and solidly bound throughout. The book is handsomely bound in dark green covers with black, impressed decorative highlights and bright gold gilded background lettering on the cover and spine. The binding is solid throughout with no looseness or lean. Both hinges are fine. The exterior is solid and clean, with no bumping, rubbing or discernable edge wear. The interior is clean, with no writing or underlining. The pages are aged some, but the interior is nice with floral end pages and there isn’t a mark in the book. A wonderful, vintage copy of this great Dickens work!
