In order for firefighters to competently and safety function in the dangerous situations and environments that they are often placed in, they must be involved in active training in a safe low stress environment. This builds confidence and allows for the recognition of conditions that could endanger their lives.
The final step is the review of actual fire incidents through debriefing. Everyone tries to do their very best at an emergency incident. Rarely is the performance “perfect”, there is always something to be learned from every incident. Firstly, everyone must encourage each other to honestly appraise their own performance and then to appraise the performance of others in the team in a positive manner to ensure that people are not discouraged, strengths should be reinforced, and areas of improvement should be identified. Strategies can then be developed to ensure increased efficiency and safety.

6. Flashover - A flashover is the near simultaneous ignition of all combustible material in an enclosed area. Flashover occurs when the majority of surfaces in a space are heated to the point at which they give off flammable gases that are hot enough to sustain combustion. Flashover normally occurs at 930 °F (500 °C).

7. Backdraft VIDEO (15:50 minute training video)
A backdraft is a situation which can occur when a fire is starved of oxygen; consequently combustion ceases but the fuel gases and smoke remain at high temperature. If oxygen is re-introduced to the fire, eg. by opening a door to a closed room, combustion can restart often resulting in an explosive effect as the gases heat and expand.
