FILM 1: "DESIGN FOR DREAMING" (1956) COLOR Runtime 9 minutes Set at the 1956 General Motors Motorama, this is one of the key Populuxe films of the 1950s, showing futuristic dream cars and Frigidaire's "Kitchen of the Future." Produced to bring the 1956 G.M. Motorama to audiences unable to see it in major cities Man, was that a weird dream, or what? No, you're not dreaming, you're watching an industrial film! A woman dreams a man in a tux and a silver mask comes into her bedroom and whisks her away to the GM Motorama at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. She sings, dances, flies, gets all the cars she wants, makes a frosted cake with lit birthday candles merely by pushing a button in the Kitchen of Tomorrow, cavorts in various fashions, and cruises the Highway of the Future with her silver-masked beau. This film was designed to generate excitement for the Motorama and act as a replacement for it for those who couldn't make it to New York. It all comes off like one of those silly, improvisational "musicals" they do on "Whose Line Is It Anyway?", only with lavish production values ("OK, you're to make up a musical about "the latest fashions", "cars", "birthday cakes", "dreams", and "the future" go!"). An interesting piece of trivia: Apparently the film has no actual scenes of the Motorama it was filmed in its entirety on a soundstage in Florida!
FILM 2: "A TOUCH OF MAGIC" (1961) COLOR Runtime 10 minutes General Motors Motorama of 1961. An interesting followup to DESIGN FOR DREAMING. This film seems to be a loosely tied together story of a maried couple, but the story is just a front for the producers to throw in as much bizzare stuff as possible. Ok, the story starts off with a man designing a play suddenly a couple bursts onto the model scene he made and start singing, then they for some reason end up in Medievil times and a clown in a sourcers hat appears and traps the woman, the guy fights off her attacker and then a dragon, then after thier defeated poof we're back to modern times where the two dance and model model cars in one of these scenes the dragon from the medievil scene hitches a ride and attempts to fondle the woman to which the man replies by slapping the dragon and telling him "Behave". The rest of the film follows an equally bizzare path, the epitone of which has the couple THROWING plates from the table into the dishwasher! Folks, I am not making this up. Please note:
