• Published October 1904 by Macmillan & Co.  
   
• 366 pages. Beautifully illustrated. 
   
• Publisher's original blue cloth with red, blue and white decorative design on cover, cover still fairly bright with spine somewhat faded, particularly publisher name at bottom. Chip (noticeable) in spine cloth directly center below "London" just above midpoint.
  
  
• Very nice, clean end-papers with exception of contemporary 1904 inscription and POS verso of 2nd ffep with ink stain bleeding onto and through the half-title (following).
   
• Nice unbroken hinges, strongly bound, clean bright pages with only minimal toning. A very good copy in spite of the two flaws noted above.
  
  
• Note about issue/printing:  This is considered the 2nd issue but the effective 1st issue. The title-leaf is a cancel, showing 1903, 1904 next to Century & Co. and October 1904 for Macmillan. The only known copy where the copyright page is NOT a cancel and does not show 1903 or the word "October" is Jack London's personal copy which sold last year at auction for an astronomical sum. Whether the spine is white or gold-stamped is not an issue point, there is no established sequence (BAL V p. 434).
