You are bidding on an extraordinary book! This gorgeous telling of the Life of Christ by Rev. William Hanna of Edinburgh is perhaps almost 150 years old yet retains its spectacular gilt decorations and nearly flawless text!
 
Let me say upfront that the publication date is somewhat ambiguous. There is no copyright page, and the only date appearing (1863) is at the end of Rev. Hanna's preface. The title page identifies the publisher as the American Tract Society. The book measures 6-1/2" wide by 9-1/4" tall and runs for 861 pages.
 
Several features distinguish this volume, aside from its scarcity. First, of course, is the highly decorated boards. My photos simply don't do it justice. The boards are a rich forest green with a stippled texture and embossing. The gilt on both front and spine is bright, highly detailed, and vibrant. On the rear board, the scene from the front cover is repeated as a simple embossed outline.
 
A second feature is the outstanding text enhanced with many, many illustrations, of which I've selected only a few to show you. These appear to be photo lithographs and offer incredible detail and evocative imagery. Each is protected with fine tissue paper. Please feel free to click on any of my pictures to enlarge them.
 
And finally, what truly sets this book apart is its superb condition! Inside, the hinges are intact and appear to be strong. The text is clean, only slightly age-toned, and free of tears and creases. The illustrations seem to me to be pretty much as new. The partially erased words "From Father" appear on the first blank page, but that is the only writing I see.
 
And now the cover, which overall is in very good condition. But the corners are bumped and worn through, and there's wear on the spine extremities; especially the upper spine toward the front where you can see a spot worn through. Otherwise, the boards remain exceptional.
 
A simply gorgeous volume! One that will enhance any personal library!
