Caring for your Peridot Jewelry

Like other gemstones, peridots should be protected from knocks and bangs that might chip the stone. In addition, regular cleaning will keep your peridot jewelry looking its best.

Everyday Caution

Remove peridot jewelry before doing housecleaning, yard work or other activities that might subject it to damaging blows or strikes. Put on your jewelry after applying makeup, lotions, hair spray and other cosmetics, and avoid using household chemicals while wearing peridot jewelry. In addition, avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, which can fade color, and extreme temperature changes which might crack the stones.

Cleaning Peridot Jewelry

Clean peridot in warm water with dishwashing detergent, or a mild commercial solution. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasives which can damage the surface and destroy the luster. You can use a small amount of ammonia in the water to help brighten the stone if it's excessively dirty. Soak in dishwater solution for 10 to 20 minutes, then scrub thoroughly but gently with a soft brush. Rinse and dry well before storing. Have jewelry professionally cleaned every one to two years.

Storing Peridot Jewelry

Because the stone is relatively soft, peridot jewelry needs to be protected from harder jewelry and metals in your jewelry box. Store it in a soft pouch of its own to keep other gems from scratching or marring the surface.

Caring for your Diamond Jewelry

Professional Cleaning
This is the best option. It’s also important to have your jewelry checked occasionally to make sure prongs haven’t bent or weakened.

Mild Liquid Detergent
Soak your jewelry in a small bowl warm, sudsy water made with any mild liquid detergent. Gently brush the diamond jewelry with a soft toothbrush while it is in the suds. Then, rinse each piece under warm running water. Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Make sure to always stopper your sink.

Household Ammonia
Place the jewelry in a small bowl containing a half-and-half solution of ammonia and cold water for thirty minutes. Lift out and gently tap around the front and back of the mounting with a small soft brush. Swish in the solution a second time, rinse and drain on tissue paper.

Jewelry Cleaners
Use any brand name liquid jewelry cleaner and follow the instruction given on the label.

Vodka on the Rocks
No one is sure how it was actually discovered, but it is safe to say that at some point someone took the idea of a "vodka on the rocks" literally and discovered an imaginative way to clean their precious diamonds. Simply let the diamond soak in a glass of vodka. Preferably one you do not intend to drink afterwards.

Here are 4 simple rules that will keep your gold jewelry looking new. It is a very durable metal but its luster can fade with time, but with proper care, yours can last a lifetime.

Rule #1- Do NOT wear your Gold Jewelry 24/7

While many of us love to wear our favorite pieces day and night, the most effective way to preserve them is to limit the exposure to daily elements. Many personal care products can be harmful to your piece. This includes lotion, make-up, perfume, shaving cream, and hairspray. These daily elements can form a dull film that covers the gold and is hard to remove. You can easily prevent this by removing them before grooming. Rule

#2- Avoid chlorine bleach at all costs

Never clean them with any chlorine bleach substance. Chlorine bleach ruins it by oxidizing the metal and turning it black. Remove them before you do any household chores. Some common household cleaners have bleach and other chemicals that may adversely affect them. Do not go swimming or in a hot tub with your golden accessory. Because of the chlorine, prolonged exposure to a swimming pool can turn it into a black color.

Rule # 3 Clean your piece properly

Light tarnish can be removed by using soap water and a soft bristle brush. After gentle scrubbing, rinse and dry with a cotton cloth. You can also use a specially treated cloth or other cleaning products. For gold jewelry without colored gemstones, you can use an ultrasonic cleaning machine. For heavy tarnish, please consult your jeweler for the best cleaning method. Rule #4- Proper storage is a must

Dry your gold jewelry before storage. Moisture can weaken springs and clasps, which increases the likelihood of breakage. Provide ample space for storage. They should not be in direct contact with other pieces because they can scratch each other. Most boxes have separate compartments so that you can keep them separate
