Synopsis
The legacy of Australia's brutal colonial policies against the aborigines haunts this gothic novel. After the death of his father in a fire, William, a boy who is ill, and the mother who neglects him move in with his elderly, crotchety great-uncle, John McIvor, at Kuran House, a decaying mansion set amidst the remains of a sheep ranch. McIvor broods over past setbacks and enlists his nephew in a crusade against a law requiring the return of land to its original inhabitants, the Australian aborigines, while William's health continues to fail and ghostly visions torment him.
