An original issue of Le Miroir des Sports dated June 28, 1938 with cover and two interior pages focused on the redo Boxing Match between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling which had been held on June 22 1938 in Yankee Stadium in New York.
Schmeling had stunned Joe Louis and the rest of the Boxing world with his 1936 victory over Louis. He had handed Louis his first professional defeat tied up neatly with a knockout in 12 rounds. Schmeling had studied and trained specifically for the fight (While Louis was reported to be goofing off with the ladies and playing Golf) Schmeling was able to take advantage of Louis distinctive habit of dropping his left hand after a jab.
The fight was a wakeup call for Louis who was adamantly pushing for a rematch.
The 'Round two' was scheduled for June 22 1938, exactly a year after Louis had beaten world heavyweight champion James Braddock. Louis, who refused to accept the title until he successfully beat Schmeling, took the contest seriously this time, Schmeling went into the ring expecting to be able to use the same inconsistency to wear Louis down, but the Brown Bomber mopped the floor with him. The fight was over after only two minutes and four seconds of round one. Louis had thrown 41 punches, 3/4 of which had landed solidly. Schmeling had thrown 2. Schmeling ended up in the hospital for ten days, with cracked vertebrae among other things.
Louis victory reverberated throughout the African American community, there was celebrations in the streets, and pride in hundreds of thousands of hearts. Louis is considered by some to be the first African American international hero. As Maya Angelou put it Louis was the... "Champion of the world. A Black boy. Some Black mother's son. He was the strongest man in the world." The political significance, in the lead up to WWII, of an African American beating a Caucasian German is impossible to quantify, but it went far towards advancing the cause of African Americans, and providing undeniable evidence against the racial stereotyping that pervaded most western cultures.
