Synopsis
Raisha, daughter of a Senegalese sub-chief, is captured and sold into slavery to a Dutch family on the island of St. John. Her fiancee and later husband becomes the leader of a group of runaway slaves who rebel, and Raisha, known as Angelica by the family she serves, escapes in time to witness their mass suicide rather than be recaptured as slaves.
Relates the experiences of a young Senegalese girl brought as a slave to the Danish owned Caribbean island of St. John as she participates in the slave revolt of 1733-1734.
