Baby-voiced indie singer-songwriter Rosie Thomas returns with her fourth solo album, THESE FRIENDS OF MINE, featuring a newfound interest in electronic instrumentation and vocal effects. Although most of the album consists of folky indie pop tunes akin to Thomas's earlier work, her vocals on several tracks are heavily treated, resulting in an effect akin to Laurie Anderson's early experiments with the Vocoder. Elsewhere, Thomas reworks two unexpected covers--of Fleetwood Mac's "Songbird" and R.E.M.'s "The One I Love"--into settings that make them sound like quirky originals.
