Synopsis
David Markson is justly celebrated for his offbeat, highly experimental novels. GOING DOWN, however, is a more mainstream work. Originally published in 1970, it is set in the '60s in Mexico, where Markson lived for several years. The story is told through the consciousness of six characters, whose elliptical narratives overlap and occasionally contradict. The plot's main focus is two Americans--Fern and Steve--who encounter murder and chaos in an alien land. GOING DOWN has always been compared to the work of Malcolm Lowry, in terms of its themes and symbolism, but Markson has said that T.S. Eliot's influence on this novel was "inescapable." The book, however, is vintage Markson: allusive, witty, and filled with the word play that is part of everything he writes.
