The CURTISS ROBIN was a tremendously popular airplane in the 1920s and 30s. It was stable, sturdy and dependable. Two were used to set an early world record for staying aloft (yes early aerial refueling) over Hattiesburg, MS. Perhaps the most famous version was the one that "Wrong Way" Corrigan flew after Lindberg flew the Atlantic in 1927. Corrigan had been a mechanic in the assembly crew at Ryan when they built Lindberg's NYP special order. He admired Lindberg's achievement and set out to duplicate it. He flew his much patched up CURTISS ROBIN to New York and applied for permission to fly the Atlantic. Instead, the CAA red X'd it and certified it as only suitable for one last flight back to California. He took off and "accidentally" ended up in Ireland. He vowed for the rest of his long, long life that he was really headed back to California but that his compass must have been stuck backwards and led him to end up in Ireland instead! His ROBIN was disassembled and put on a ship back to the U.S. When he arrived he was given a tremendous ticker-tape parade down 5th Avenue in New York City---just as his hero, Lindberg, had been years before. He went on to write a book about his mistaken flight which was made into a movie. He actually acted as himself in that nice old black & white movie of his life. Corrigan ended up owning a vineyard in California. Here is a nice, clean, copy of Hurst Bowers' famous scale model of the plane along with the Model Airplane News magazine construction article. It has a 40 inch wing span, suitable for a 1/2A engine and either free flight or RC. This CURTISS ROBIN is as stable in flight as any model that could ever be built and flown. I HAVE ALSO BLOWN UP THE MAGAZINE PLANS TO A 48 INCH WING SPAN FOR THOSE WHO WANT A BIT LARGER RC SCALE MODEL FOR AN .09 ENGINE. SO BUILDING TWO SIZES OF THE MODEL IS POSSIBLE FROM THIS OFFER. The red and yellow ROBIN pictured is on the cover of an old Flying Models magazine. The orange colored ROBIN pictured is featured on the cover of an old 1978 Sport Aviation magazine. The red ROBIN in flight is from July, 1969, Sport Flying which has a multi-page scale documentation article. You can get these long out-of-date magazines from eBay sellers of old magazines. I am only showing these pictures for you to see what your model might look like. I do not make copies of these magazines nor offer them for sale. I include a detailed 3-view of different versions of the plane for your scale documentation. YOU ARE PURCHASING A NICE, CLEAN, WHITE FULL-SIZE COPY OF THE ORIGINAL MAGAZINE PLAN AND A 110% ENLARGEMENT, PLUS A COPY OF THE CONSTRUCTION ARTICLE, FOLDED AND IN A MANILLA ENVELOPE. Yes, I gladly combine postage for multiple orders. For multiple orders please wait for me to invoice you before you pay. I gladly ship overseas to PayPal customers. |
