Recorded during the venerable American institution's creative peak, this is an all-but-ideal single disc compilation. With all the hits (including Greg Allman's solo "Midnight Rider"), it also contains studio versions of most of the concert favorites, including the epic "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed."
Interestingly, for a group that first made its mark as a contemporary blues band, not much of the material here is blues per se, with "Whipping Post" being the obvious exception. This well-chosen collection demonstrates that the Allman Brothers have always been stylistically eclectic, with elements of jazz, country, soul and gospel grafted onto their basic blues-rock template.

Editorial reviews
4 Stars - Excellent - ..resplendent with fine virtuoso guitar performances from the late Duane Allman and Dicky Betts...Classics come thick and fast..

With their dueling guitar leads and harmonies built on a double drummer foundation, the Allman Brothers Band cast the mold for the southern rock sound that would proliferate in the '70s.

Virtuoso musicians, their songs drew upon a number of southern influences, including country, the blues, New Orleans jazz, and even gospel, creating a sound that was distinctly theirs.

Decade of Hits is a great catalog of the Allman's at their guitar wielding best. The sweet, infectious harmonies on the instrumental "Jessica" have become a classic reference point in themselves. The Allman's are probably best known for the heroic "Ramblin' Man." Written and sung by the now legendary Dickey Betts, the song contained everything that made the band great: intricate guitar harmonies, a strong melody, and just enough twang to keep the thing tight. Decade also contains Allman staples "Melissa," "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," and "Southbound."

The perfect collection for the person who doesn't want to go out and buy each individual album.  All of their best songs are contained in this great single CD.

The disc is in excellent condition, as is all artwork, though the label has a sticker on it from a CD jukebox system and the jewel case show some scuffs from wear and age.  Otherwise overall integrity of the case, artwork, and CD is perfect.

The CD is an original remaster compilation -- not a copy, nor import!   It was purchased new by me.  Played it a few times shortly after purchase in 1991.  Spent the rest of their time sitting in a CD rack, waiting to be listened to and enjoyed.
