2491 - Lietz Geologists' Compass Aluminum Case

2491 - Lietz Geologists Compass and Clinometer. This is a beautiful instrument, appears to have been well treated. I find this compass described in the Dietzgen catalog of 1912, so is nearly 100 yrs old. A century ago aluminum was a very expensive material but thought worthy for those tools that had to be carried by field people up the mountains and down in the valleys. The needle is 2 5/8ths inches, two levels Jacolb staff mounting, folding sights, variation arc, movable sighting circle and with the base graduated. In leather case. The instrument is particularly adapted for topo-graphical work. The compass circle and its needle are enclosed in a circular box which is attached to a base 4 inches square. The edges of the base are beveled and graduated; two of them with a tangent scale and the other two with scales of eighths and 10ths of inches. The compass circle is movable, and by means of an inside vernier the variations of the needle can be offset to five minutes. On the south side of the compass face is an arc of 180 degrees, figured from 0 to 90 degrees either side of the zero line, and when the compass rests on its south edge, the anle of slope is indicated by a small pendalum hung from the center pin. The base of aluminum is without nicks. clean and neat as a pin. The leather case shows some wear but overall is still in good shape. The unit weighs 1lb 9 oz so will ship in a fixed rate box for about $10 insured.
