The deHavilland BEAVER with its huge 450hp R-985 radial engine was my favorite plane to fly in the Army. We could carry 1,000 pounds of cargo or passengers and still take off in less than 500 feet!
Once I had to take a newspaper reporter to Fort Stewart, GA, from Fort Rucker, AL, to observe a firepower demonstration. I went over the day before to pick out an open field on which to land near the firing ranges. I found one with about 1,500 feet of open grass, surrounded by tall trees.
The next day, with the reporter on board, I made a full flaps tight traffic pattern, racked the plane into a knife edge with wings vertical, flew between two trees, leveled the wings, touched down and instantly applied brakes and slid for about 600 feet to a full stop.
I was really proud of how skilled I was with this great bush plane. But when I looked at my passenger, he had turned green, opened the door and threw up all over the right side! I had to fly him back to Alabama without his getting to see the firepower demonstration. From that time on I always briefed my passengers on what maneuvers I was going to do in advance of doing them.
This great scale plan from the original Berkeley kit is really the best true scale plans of all the ones I have for my favorite plane. The wing span is 48 inches or 1 inch to the foot scale. All of the parts patterns are on the plan. You can build it for RC or UC.
The engine recommended was an .049. For RC, since you will want to cover the wings with thin sheet balsa, I'd recommend a modern .049 rather than a vintage one. The dihedral in the model's wings is sufficient for 3-channel operation.
