This is a Vintage 1939 Spuriscope Counterfeit Money Detector which came out of a Manhattan estate and it is in good looking and in good working condition. It was made by Ruth Devices Corporation of New York and it has a patent number which corresponds with the year 1939. It was designed to detect counterfeit money where the plate position letter was not what it should be for a given serial number and series. A newer version of this was appraised at a smytheonline monetary auction for $350-500. It measures 1''in depth x 4-1/2'' in diameter and weighs 4 pounds.
