Item specifics - Antiquarian/Collectible Books

Subject: --Printing Year: 1887
Topic: --Origin: --
This auction is for a beautiful and fascinating first edition antique historical book with numerous portraits and color illustrations, charts, and diagrams in very good condition entitled "The Story of Labor in All Ages," or "The Story of Manual Labor in all Lands and Ages; Its Past Condition, Present Progress, and Hope for the Future," "The Lights and Shadows of History in Contrast,"  by John Cameron Simonds and John T. McEnnis, "Illustrated with Portraits and Colored Diagrams," published in 1887 by R.S. Peale & Co.  The copyright is 1886, but this has sold in the past listing 1887 as the actual first edition publication date.

Topics, names, events, and other contents relating to labor in world history include Domestic Slavery, The Feudal System, Famines and Their Cause, Gunpowder, Printing, Food and Dress, The Court of Nobles, Masons and Kindred Organizations, The American Indians, the Civil War, Immigration, The Crusades, Origin of the People, The Greeks of Asia, The Great Wall of China, Herodotus, The West Indies, Negros, Taxes, Farming Methods, The Puritans, Pioneers, Priests, Egyptian Monuments, Famine, Byzantium, The Caste System, Child Labor, Early Society in Egypt, Ancient Palestine, The Black Death, Jerusalem, Migrations, The Garden of Eden, The Knights of St. Crispin, Nimrod, Babylon, Temples, Relics of Prehistoric America, The Persian Wars, Greek Civilization, Colonies and Trading Posts, The Boston Massacre, Rome, Capitalism, Early German Tribes, Armor and War Implements, Mohammed, Serfdom, Christianity, Jasper Coligny, Chivalry, The Goths, Frederick Barbarossa, The Moorish Conquest, Spain, the Lombard Cities, Charlemagne, Guilds, Uprisings of Peasants in France, The Magna Charta, Saxons, Mining, Cottages of England, Land Tenures, The Louisiana Purchase, Aztec Civilization, The Grange, English Manufactory, Wage Workers, The Sailors' Strike, Merchant Guilds of the Middle Ages, Cotters and Husbandmen, Scotland, Female Labor, The Revolution of 1848, The Bothy System, Lawlessness and Oppression, Increase in Pauperism, The Welsh People, Quarrymen, Blacksmiths, Dwellings and Modes of Life, Medieval Craftsmen, The Huguenots, Unions and Strikes, The Bloody Upheaval of 1789, Artisans and Mechanics, Antique Methods in Agriculture, The Dutch, the Diamond Industry, The Scandinavians, Nomads, Palaces, the Revolution of 1660, Social Distinctions, Peter the Great, Railroad Development, Catherine the Great, The Ottoman Empire, Herdsmen, the Turks, Persia, Architecture, and much more!

Illustrations / Portrait engravings in this book include a frontispiece of the Grand Master Workman of Knights of Labor - T.V. Powderly, Uriah S. Stephens - Founder of Knights of Labor, Peter M. Arthur - Grand Chief Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Henry George, Carroll D. Wright, Richard Griffiths, Mrs. Imogene C. Fales, Edward L. Dailey, Lizzie Rogers, V. Hoffmeyer, T.B. Barry, Charles B. Litchman, William M. Manks, George G. Block, John Jarrett, Louis Arrington, George Harris, William Weihe, Hugh Miller, Robert Howard, P. Ross Marin, P.J. McGuire, Christopher Evans,William Amison, John McBride, Joseph B. Dyer, James Hamilton, Adolph Strasser, and Frederick Turner.

The book is in rare wonderful condition, bright in color, with numerous illustrations including portraits of well-known figures in industry and labor, very clean throughout and crisp, entirely bound with the pages tight, without apparent significant tears or markings except for what looks like a light notation that was erased on the first blank sheet.  There are red edges to the pages, decorated endpapers, and the brown hard cover and spine has a pictorial blindstamped design.

The only significant wear to the book is surface rubbing, edgewear, and bumping to the cover typical from shelving and handling, as shown, very slight loosening of the hinges, I noticed one or two pages with corner folds and one page with a small edge tear, but except for some light smudging mostly at the edges of some of the first pages, this book looks largely unread.  Overall, a scarce and interesting 1st edition antique history book in very nice condition.

We are offering several vintage and collectible old books for sale so please visit our other auctions.  No reserve & thanks for looking!
