While it is certainly axiomatic that the other great American travel book to Europe, published a year later in 1869 by the author Mark Twain and entitled "Innocents Abroad" has long overshadowed the travel account of Julia Ward Howe published in 1868 - Howe's fine book bears reading, for it is a very different kind of work.
Julia Ward Howe was a poet, certainly, and her sense of beauty, timing and cadence are finely rendered in her lush account of a trip from the oaks of England to the olive groves of the Greek Islands. And of course, we see things throught the eyes of a woman, feisty certainly, but nonetheless a woman.
A delightful read, a beautiful verbal picture of travel through Europe on route to the Greeks - by a contemporary of Mark Twain's rambunctious "Innocents Aborad".
