As a former NC State Chess Champion, it is my pleasure to provide these easy to understand power-packed Chess lessons. These were designed to assist the novice thru Class B player. The lessons are easy to understand, and are described with move by move instruction.

The lessons in VOL 1 are as follows:
1. Caro Kann - This video contains important Opening information, Middlegame Tatics, as well as Endgame thought processes. Bernard describes the importance of Open Files, The French Defense, Important Squares, Good and Bad Bishops, Bishop Scope, the importance of controlling squares, Space, Piece Maneuverability and Move by Move Game Analysis. This video is filled with tactics, good positional chess, didactic Chess verbiage.

2. Attacking Along the H File - This video provides instructional analysis of an actual game played starting in the last portion of the Opening, but focuses on Mikklegame play. This video will help students to recognize Chessboard patterns, use the files correctly, and use the powerful pieces together. In this episode, we talk about sacrifices, removing the defender as well as sound Chess Tactics.

3. How to Use Pawn to Attack Your Opponents, King - This lesson provides instruction on controlling the important diagonals, how to develop a good position coming out of the opening (which is critical if playing a higher rated or more experience player). Once the opening position is established, you are guided through the Middlegame to help you develop your piece play and stragegies effectively. This video describes how to get your king safe, get your powerful pieces in position, and use your pawns to breakthrough to your opponents King!

4. Mating Puzzles - Through practice, Basketball players drop shots all day long! As Chess enthusiasts, Pattern Recognition is creical to become better players. This video provides several Chess Puzzles, as Bernard walks you though the proper way to examine these positions and recognize the solutions because one wrong move and you are MATED.

The lessons in Volume 2 are as follows:

1. Double Attacks - This video provides strategic instruction on how to double attack your opponents' pieces. It also describes move-by-move thought processes, good and bad pawn structure, and tells you how to find the solution in a game of Chess. King safety, tempo, opening thru endgame strategies are provided to help you become a good Chess player.

2. Middle Game Tactics - This video contains the development of a tactical and positional game played at expert level, where both players battle over critical squares, and utilize relative pins, and forks that win games.

3. Sacrificing to Create An Advantage - Bernard describes and demonstrates the logic behind sacrificing, and uses the advantage to bring demise to the opponents King! Here, a good position is established, so the tactics become alive. Converting a locked position (through sacfificing) into a victory is also discussed.

4. Space - Bernard explains the importance of controlling space on a chessboard. Having space opens up a plethora of attacking opportunities, and being without space can suffocate your efforts into a defeat. Learn the importance of gaining SPACE.

Volumes 3 through 10 are HERE!

The Chess lessons in VOLUME 3 are as follows:

1. The King's Indian Attack Introduced - The King's Indian Attack Opening is good for all levels of play, (for beginners thru National Mastership). On this Chess Video, Bernard Baker analyzes an example game between Grandmaster Bobby Fischer and Efim Geller. This game was played in 1968, with Bobby Fischer playing the KIA, against the French Defense. Masterful Chess Tactics are demonstrated. They include Chess Opening principles, overloading on important squares, fianchettoed Bishop, and much more Chess information.

2. King's Indian vs. The Sicilian Defense - This Chess Lesson provides a continuation of how to play the King's Indian Attack. This video describes how to play against the Sicilian Defense.  Full of tactical opportunities, both armies try to attack the opponents King. This lesson provides Chess insight into a game played by two very formidable opponents.

3. King's Indian Attack vs. a Non-Standard Opening - When playing a good player, you must open the Chess game correctly. If you don't, you provide your opponent with all kinds of advantages. See how to correctly play Chess Openings, and follow the rules of Chess with Bernard.

4. Vs the Dutch Defense - Though this lesson provides Chess Strategies related to that of the KIA, it also provides powerful Chess Instruction about the Dutch Defense as well. See these two Chess Systems collide in a lesson that anyone could understand.

Get Better at Chess Volume 4 contains 4 Chess Videos. This video has some easy to understand Chess lessons.

1. How to Analyze your Chess Game - This is a critical skill that all good Chess players have learned. Not only do you analyze your Chess game after you play, but you analyze the game each and every moment of the Game! There are many things to think about during the game...tempo, should I attack, have I equalized, who is ahead in development...etc, and much, much, much more. This lesson will help you to Improve your Chess game!

2. How to Analyze your Chess Game Part II - This Chess lesson provides an enriched look at how to understand your Chess position, while in a good Chess game. Also it helps you navigate through the Chess Opening, through the Middle game, and the Endgame. You would be surprised... Many players don't recognize the part of the game they are in. Part of improving is realizing, especially since the rules are different for the different parts of the game... Please Let Bernard Baker explain.

3. The Dutch Defense - Take an enriched look at one of the most aggressive defenses that Black can play.

4. Analysis of King's Indian - This Chess Video provides instruction on how to effectively play and understand one of Grandmaster Bobby Fischer's favorite Chess Openings, with move-by-move comments.

These lessons are for children and adults that want to get better at Chess. There are children as young as 5 years old watching and comprehending what occurs on the Chessboard. Adults love to learn Chess as well. We believe you will get much more from our DVDs than you will from many Chess Books.

Get Better at Chess Volume 5 contains 5 Chess Videos. This video has some strong Chess lessons.

1. Kan Variation of the Sicilian Defense - The Kan is an effective defensive Sicilian defense. I have played it many, many times. This is in contrast to many other Sicilian Defenses which tend to be more aggressive in nature. The Kan is a hedgehog, (like a porcupine), and has a waiting element to it. Tactics include pawn storms, hedgehog pawn structure, intermezzo, battling for important squares... etc.

2. The King's Gambit - The "Immortal Game" was played by Adolf Anderson and Lionel Kieseritzky in London, England in 1851. This is probably one of the most famous Chess games of all time, and it provides a great example of the King’s Gambit. Four improbably piece sacrifices lead Adolf Anderssen to victory. The Chess tactics included are removing the guard, piece sacrifice, attacking backwards pawns, and rapid development of all Chess pieces.

3. Reti vs. Tartakower 1910 - This famous game is a miniature variation of the Caro-kann Defense played by Richard Reti. This short by fun game is analyzed by Bernard as discover Check, sacrifice and other tactics are discussed.

4. Samisch vs. Nimzovich 1923 - This famous game exemplifies the idea of Zugzwang (German - "I don't have a good move"). In fact, this Chess game is commonly referred to as the "Immortal Zugzwang Game". In this case, a position was created preventing white from making any move that would not put in a worse position.

5. Samisch Variation vs. the King's Indian Defense - This Chess Lesson presents two examples of the Samisch Variation vs. the King's Indian Defense. In the Samisch, White plays an early f3, and Castle's Queenside. Both Chess armies collide in this as white pawn storms, with a Pillsbury Breakthrough, and black fianchettoes, and attacks on the Queenside.

These lessons are for children and adults that want to get better at Chess. There are children as young as 5 years old watching and comprehending what occurs on the Chess board. Adults love to learn Chess as well.

Volume 6 contains . This Chess DVD contains the following:

1. King's Gambit Overview - This lesson is an introduction to the King's Gambit Chess Opening. In the King's Gambit, white sacrifices a pawn for a gain in development. This lesson features two Chess games; one describes the King's Gambit Accepted, and the other describes the King's Gambit Declined. Tactics include sacrifice.

2. Attacking the Sicilian Defense - This Chess Lesson describes the techniques associated with playing white against the Sicilian Defense. This position includes a Maroczy bind which is a good position for white.

3. Fundamental Chess Opening Principles - This Chess Video is geared toward the novice/intermediate players. It describes key rules and Chess strategies regarding strong Chess Opening principles. If you have not had formal Chess instruction, this lesson is a "must see". This Chess video finishes with an example Chess game played using the Catalon System. Tactics included are Open position, Closed position, the rapid development of all pieces, Colle Triangle, Stonewall, fianchetto, Can Opener, Pillsbury Breakthrough. Enjoy!

4. Samisch vs. Grandmaster Nimzovich 1923 - Complete move by move analysis and instruction of the Grand Prix Attack, which is a fine alternative to fend against the Sicilian Defense. Discussion includes fiancetto positions, replacing Knights, Closed Center, and so much more... The game was played by Nigel Short and Gelfont in 1991.

Learning with these Chess Lessons has proven to help people to get better in Chess!

Volume 7 was created for upcoming Chess players. Its contents are detailed, but simple enough that children can understand them. I believe you will enjoy these 5 lessons.

1. Taminov Variation of the Sicilian Defense - This Chess Lesson is an introduction of the Taminov Variation of the Sicilian Defense by way of an example game by Jan Timman and Vadim Milov. The teachings of these Chess games are what I studied to win several Chess Tournaments in the Charlotte, NC area.

2. King's Indian Defense - This is an introduction to the King's Indian Defense. (KID is one of the strongest defenses that can be played in the game of Chess. It can be played against almost any Chess Opening.) We review how the King's Indian Defense was used in a game played by Flear and Sharar in 2001.

3. Rook/King Checkmate - An accurate demonstration of how to employ Chess Principles necessary to Checkmate your opponent with a King and a Rook.

4. Chess Tactics - A comprehensive view of Class A Level Chess with move-by-move analysis. Examples include how to use Open files, Pins, En Passant, Lunges, Intermezzos, and other Chess tactical maneuvers to your advantage. This game was played by Bernard Baker, and Clarke Brosi, and the Charlotte Chess Club, in 2004.

5. Out positioning your Opponent - The importance of developing ALL of your pieces prior to attacking your opponent is illustrated in this video. A Scotch Game from Chess Life Magazine is thoroughly analyzed, and commented on. The benefit of controlling Opening Files is emphasized as well.

Volume 8 contains many "Chess Nuggets" and lots of knowledge about Chess. The Chess lessons are as follows:

1. Pawns - This monologue explains how to create, recognize, and convert a pawn majority vs. a pawn minority into a won game. The different kinds of pawns and pawn structures are discussed as well. This Chess video will also teach you to generate good pawn positions, maintain them, and exploit your opponent’s weak ones. This will definitely improve your Chess.

2. The Latvian Gambit - This wild and crazy but fun opening has been labeled everything from powerful to unsound, but in this selection, we share move by move analysis of a game where a Class D player executes the Latvian Gambit and obtains a win over a National Master. The Chess game was selected from Chess Life magazine.

3. The Nimzovich Defense vs. E4 - A fine alternative for playing against E4 is evaluated, and commented on. This game is played at Expert Level, and was played Grand Master Aaron Nimzovitch. This example demonstrates how to convert a bad Knight to a good Knight, and how that Knight can be used to win the game.

4. Trading a Queen for Lesser Pieces is not Always Bad - This entry was played by National Master Daniel Tapia, and provides us a view at how to win without your Queen. Here, he trades his Queen, and uses his resources to win by force. He shows how to use passed pawns to the fullest potential.

5. Pins, Skewers and Open Files - This Chess lesson offers a very complete and thorough analysis of the Dutch Defense. It contains Chess instruction on positional piece play, as both sides attempt to exercise Chess tactics.

We believe that this video will help you to improve your Chess!

This Chess DVD provides children and adults with sound Chess teaching. Bernard Baker describes Chess Tactics, Chess Openings, and Chess Moves on a single DVD. This DVD contains 4 good Chess Lessons.

1. The Power of the Pin - Here, we instruct on the different kinds of Pins, how they work, and how to maximize your winning potential with them. Did you know there are 3 types of Chess pins?

2. Middlegame Tactics II - This lesson demonstrates how the center of the Chessboard (focal point of the Chess Opening) expands to the 16 squares, which is the focal point of the middle game. It provides examples of good positional piece play, and shows hot to attack isolated pieces, plus more.

3. The London System - In this system, the center of the chessboard is battled over, and white provides a clear exhibition of how to destroy a fiancettoed position. This game was played by National Master Frankie Newton. It describes how placing your Knights on the rim are truly dim.

4. Zukertort Variation of the Colle System - This lesson reviews an example game of the Zukertort Variation of the Colle. In this discussion, Bernard shares Chess knowledge and many key Chess tactics as they were implemented in this Chess game. Tactics include intermezzo, pin, Colle triangle, passed pawn, and other Chess Tactics.

We believe all of our videos will benefit and help you to get better at Chess!
