Cucumber is a tender, warm-season vegetable that produces well when given proper care and protection. The vines of standard varieties grow rapidly and require substantial space. Vertical training methods and new dwarf varieties now allow cucumbers to be grown for slicing, salads and pickling, even in small garden plots.

Spacing and Planting

Cucumbers are usually seeded in single rows at 1 to 2 pounds per acre at a depth of 1/2 to 1 inch. Row spacings vary from 3 to 6 feet. Final plant spacing should be 9 to 12 inches in the row on irrigated land and 15 to 18 inches on dry land. Plants should be thinned before the four-leaf stage if the stand is too thick. Cucumber seed will not germinate at soil temperatures below 60°F, and the most rapid germination occurs at 95°F, so delay planting until after the date of the last spring frost. Seedlings are very sensitive to chilling injury and will be stunted and leaves will become brittle and turn white under cold growing conditions.

Soil pH and Fertilizer

Apply lime to maintain a soil pH between 5.5 and 6.8 if pH is low. On a lbs/A basis, cucumber plants absorb about 120N, 20P, and 115K from the soil.
Based on OSU soil test results the following quantities of P2O5 and K2O are recommended.

Nitrogen. Apply 50 lbs/A N with the P2O5 and K2O fertilizer, as shown in the preceding paragraph, in a preplant incorporated application. When vines begin to run, topdress with an additional 50 lbs/A N. On soils where severe leaching occurs, more N may be needed. Care should be taken not to apply too much N early in vine development as this will encourage vine growth and retard fruit set.

This information, modified from an information sheet produced by the University of Maine, provides a handy guide to application rates for selected organic fertilizers to satisfy various levels of nitrogen need (Commercial Organic Nutrient Recommendations).

The Pre-Sidedress Soil Nitrate Test, also known as the Soil NO3-N Quick Test, can determine the need for any additional nitrogen fertilizer (Heckman et al., 1997). It is now well established that if the nitrate-nitrogen level in the soil is above a threshold level of 25 ppm when the corn is 6 to 12 inches tall, additional nitrogen fertilizer will not increase yield (Howell, 1998).

1 Range in pounds of seed commonly planted per acre. Lbs/A does not apply to transplanted vegetable crops.
2 Range of within-the-row and between-the-row spacings (inches).
3 Number of seed per acre at the spacings in the example. Seed/A assumes 100 percent germination.
* TP = Transplanted
Note: Percent germination is not considered in this table. Lbs/A may not agree with Seed/A divided by No. Seed/Lb since Seed/A does not account for percent germination and variability in seed size. Also, the Actual Lbs/A required will depend on spacing, precision of planting, and percent germination.
