It is always a challenge to find a nice Proof Seated Liberty Half Dollar for under $1,000. Most eye-appealing examples sell for multiple $thousands or more. This is one of those bargain priced yet eye-appealing coins.
When you view the coin with the naked eye, the mirrors are flashy and the surfaces have a lot of life. Although the coin does have light hairlines, they do not affect the visual impression as much as usual for this grade. The coin therefore has the look of a choice proof for a lower price. And one has to pay at least PR65 money, perhaps more, to find an example devoid of hairlines. So this coin has a lot going for it.
Not only does this rare proof coin have a tiny mintage of 700, but it also appears from the current population reports that fewer than half the original mintage survive, meaning the probable number of survivors is somewhere under 350.
This coin has flashy mirrors with some cameo effect. Strong, crisp strike. Appears to the eye as a basically white coin with just a trace of light pastel toning. Appeal is way above average for this grade and certainly equal to the appeal of most PR63 Seated Halves. A Premium Quality coin for the grade.
It is hard to imagine the U.S. Mint creating a set of proof dies for a year and then only striking 700 proof halves, but that is what happened in 1875. This is indeed a rare coin. Yet it is within reach of many numismatists, as are most of the classic era proofs. Proofs between 1860 and 1916 are as a group very undervalued and are poised for large increases in the coming years. They are much cheaper than, for example, most key date 20th century coins with much larger surviving populations for a given grade.
Although Seated Liberty proofs decline in number as the grade gets higher ("Condition Rarity") it is important to remember that, for a given date, all the surviving proofs together are of the same fundamental rarity, and all are rare.
Superb highly graded gems of this date can bring $10,000, and up making proofs like this coin a great bargain at the price offered. True rarity available to all.
