TOP OF THE WEEK:
COVER: TOO MUCH LAW? Has the U.S. become a nation run by its courts rather than its legislatures? Many experts think so, and the result is a legal quagmire. Justice editor Jerrold K. Footlick, a lawyer himself, tells the story. (Cover sculpture by Robert V. Engle--Newsweek.).

THE DOOM BOOM: With the approach of the year 2000, a new wave of fundamentalist prophets is predicting the end of the world and the second coming of Christ. With ads, books and campus crusades, they have won millions of believers.

ECONOMIC Rx: The economic indicators were turning up again--and as the analysts hailed an end to the stubborn pause in recovery, new questions rose as to whether Jimmy Carter should provide more stimulus to speed things up. Newsweek asked its economic columnists, Nobel laureates Paul A. Samuelson and Milton Friedman, for their prescriptions. Samuelson offers a three-part program for the new President, while Friedman argues that the best solution may be nothing at all.

SUPER PICK: This week's Super Bowl pits the solid Minnesota Vikings against the sinister Oakland Raiders. Columnist Pete Axthelm warily casts his vote for the bad guys in black.

STELLAR SELLERS: The celebrity huckster is as old as advertising itself, but the starlight on Madison Avenue is brighter than ever as the likes of Catherine Deneuve, O.J. Simpson and Karl Malden turn pitchmen for products. Are they really worth their astronomic fees, or is the whole trend nothing but a creative cop-out?.

NANTUCKET: WIND-INDUCED CURRENTS CARRY OIL SLICK Wreck of the Argo Merchant. What may prove the most devastating oil spill ever to hit U.S. waters lies spread out over 5,000 square miles of the Atlantic, just off the Massachusetts and Rhode Island shore line. If prevailing winds and currents do not take the oil from the wrecked tanker Argo Merchant out to the open sea, the rich Georges Bank fishing grounds could be badly damaged and millions of dollars lost by the fishing and tourist industries. Science editor Peter Gwynne describes the potential damage and the battle that scientists are waging to prevent it. Sketches and diagrams depicting the dangers are by staff artist lb Ohlsson (above).
