"Tahkanka" is the Lakota word for "Bison". These magnificent animals roamed throughout the United States in our country's early history.  Today they are associated mostly with the "Great Plains".   The "Plains Indians" relied on the Bison for food, clothing, shelter and a variety of other item used in everyday life.  This animal is still revered by Native Americans.  The species was almost completely exterminated by fur traders in the late 1800's.  Today, healthy herds are located in several of our national parks.  Let's hope the Bison remains with us for generations to come.
