and tradition that is one of the most appealing rituals of the Republic. This week Patricia Nixon marries Edward Finch
Cox, the happy ending to a seven-year romance they kept secret even from their parents. To tell the story of Tricia and
her beau, Newsweek's Nancy Ball--who profiled Tricia and her sister Julie Eisenhower in 1969--reported on the wedding
plans, Elizabeth Peer focused on the bride and Noel Ragsdale interviewed friends of the couple in New York. General

MR. NIXON AND THE POLICE: Richard Nixon awakened echoes of his law-'n'-order campaign last week, defending the
Mayday mass arrests by Washington police and convening a White House meeting of police chiefs to discuss the recent
series of cop killings. The President was trying not only to boost police morale at the outset of the summer, but to
identify himself with a popular political issue. But a special Newsweek 30.city survey showed that the war on the police
may in fact be on the decline.
