What can you say about a piece this great?!!This Hungarian Village oil painting you are about to bid on is a fabulous oil on canvas by the World famous Neo-Classic artist Eszter Mattioni(1902-1993). Purchased by my Hungarian father in Europe during one of his frequent art buying trips,(He owned 5 galleries throughout N.Y.C. at the time), the piece had laid unstretched and unseen until we discovered it in one of the many lateral file cabinets holding hundreds of paintings after his death in 2004. We have decided to part with this rare and valuable piece to help fund our NEW Tribeca Gallery (Gallery 69), which has already run over budget!!! There is ample information available online about this great Hungarian artist, most notably her painting 'the Peasant Bride' which was purchased by and exhibited by the Louvre in France. Auction records for this artist top $17,000.The image measures 22" x 28",and 28 1/2" x 34 1/2" in a beautiful, custom Gallery quality frame, that perfectly complements the piece .Condition report: Both the artwork and the frame are in excellent condition no cracking chipping peeling or restoration on this painting.
She started her studies artistic skills at the College of Applied Art, where she was educated for five years. Later she was a student of Gyula Rudnay at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts for six years. From 1926 she appeared regularly at exhibitions. Several museums preserve her paintings and painted stones both at home and abroad. Her picture 'Rustic Bride' found its way to the Louvre, Musée du Luxembourg in 1937. Her major works are on display in the Hungarian National Gallery; a number of her art creations are in the hands of private owners in Szekszárd.
Between 1931 and 1942 she worked in the Szolnok colony of artists, the leading character of which was Vilmos Aba-Novák at that time. The time she spent on the Szolnok colony of artists would play a decisive role in her artistic career. The colour-composition of her paintings would become more restraine cold colours and dynamic strokes prevail in 'The Tabán of Szolnok' and 'Farewell from the Mount Mátra'. She worked out the technique of the painted stone with István Pólya in Szolnok and later she went on to improve it on her own.
In 1940 she was chosen to be a regular member of the Szolnok colony of artists. In 1946 she became a member of the Szinyei Merse Pál Society. She spent months in Italy in 1939 and in several Scandinavian countries in 1939.
