Synopsis
Kay's mother, Ida, has spent most of her life breaking bones, bruising herself, and generally being sick with something or other. When the novel begins, she has just had her second leg amputation, and by its end she is dead of cancer. Kay's life has revolved around her mother's mishaps and her parents' difficult marriage, and as she realizes she must face the sterility of her life with her cold husband and their son, she finds refuge in alcohol. This strongly realistic and lyrically written novel is, essentially, about the midlife crisis of an unusual woman.
