Description

 

This is a 7 x 9 original wire service photo of Byron "Whizzer" White from the University of Colorado during final practice for their game against New York University at Madison Square Garden. In the semi-final round of the National Invitational Tournament

White would go on to play baseball and football for the Colorado Buffaloes, signing with the Pittsburg Pirates (now the Steelers) football club in 1938 leading the league in rushing and becoming the games highest paid player. He also played for the Detroit Lions for a couple seasons before going into the US Navy during world War II.

White was appointed to the US Supreme Court by President John F. Kennedy where he served from 1962-1993, being replaced by Ruth Bader Ginsburg after he retired.

This photo is in excellent condition, has the UPI stamp on the back, and still has the paper tag attached for the newspaper for the story they would run.
