   its stories

         Oil Paper Umbrella

The umbrella is said to be invented by Ms. Yun, Lu Ban’s wife. It is said that at the end of the   Spring and Autumn period, Chinese ancient carpentry guru Lu Ban had to work outdoor all the time, and often got wet if it rained. Ms. Yun, Lu Ban’s wife wanted to make something that could weather the rain. She cut bamboo into slim sticks and covered the sticks with animal skins in the shape of a pavilion. The whole design looked like a stick when closed and a lid when opened. However, the umbrellas in early times are mostly made of feathers and silks, etc. After the invention of the paper, the silk is replaced by the paper to make paper umbrellas. This technique was improved in every dynasty and finally came to what we are using today. The oil paper umbrella is not only a daily product for weathering the sun and the rain, but also an indispensable decoration for weddings.

If you haven’t studied the history, you will never believe that the normal oil paper umbrella has been used by human beings as a rain gear for over a thousand years. The traditional craft work of making the oil paper umbrella is honoured the living fossil of Chinese traditional umbrella production. As a rain gear, the oil paper umbrella has gradually retreated from the historical stage. To make a traditional oil paper umbrella needs as many as a hundred complicated steps, all having to be done manually. Cotton paper applied with original boiled wood oil is used as the cover, with the bamboo slices used as the bone.

Bamboos facing the sun which are at least 3 years old grown in the phyllostachys pubescens forest 800 metres above the seal level are chosen for making the bones because they have strong pliability. If we can understand the family history bamboos, we may not be so worried. Actually, phyllostachys pubescens grows the fastest in the bamboo family providing best materials. To regain a 60 feet high phyllostachys pubescens only takes around 59 days. Furthermore, according to modern scientific research, appropriate felling is helpful to the growth of the bamboo forest to reach the harmony between human beings and the natural, rather than destroys it.

In the traditional Japanese wedding, the bride is also covered with red oil paper umbrella. Old people like purple umbrellas symbolizing longevity, while white umbrellas are used for funerals. Traditional Japanese dancing also uses the oil paper umbrella as props. On men’s puberty rite when they are 16, they will receive a pair of oil paper umbrellas for the same reason. The oil paper umbrella contains rich and profound culture.
