This enables the player’s teaching professional to go over the statistics later and discuss the best way to resolve the player’s trouble spots. Let’s face it: Many teaching professionals are not readily available to attend all of their student’s matches. So, when pros ask their parents or students about their performance, more often than not they remember just a few points here and there and accentuate these as the reason for the outcome. We’ve all seen the statistics taken for the top ATP and WTA tournaments on television. This process works similarly, except we will not be calculating complicated first service percentages or hard-to-follow break point opportunities. The Performance Stat Index is much easier to follow and equate. The Performance Stat Index, also known as the PSI, is a statistical formula that determines a player’s performance within a set. There are three areas in which the PSI is calculated: serve, groundstrokes & auxiliary shots, and overall performance. After calculating their PSI Ratings, tennis professionals and their students can then look at the PSI Chart to see how they performed, comparable to players of the same skill level. The easier the opponent, the higher the player’s level of performance should be. The harder the opponent, the harder ther player’s level of performance will be to maintain. The more teaching professionals and their players trained with the PSI in mind, the more the players experimented in ways to improve their player’s PSI Rating. The result: Tennis professionals and their players began to structure points around the player’s strengths, improving their PSI Rating and overall performance. The PSI has become such an effective teaching and training tool that many parents have asked about it and it is now being used by juniors in
