ORIGINAL WORLD WAR II PHOTO - ORIGINAL TO THE TIME - NOT A COPY, SCAN, OR REPRO QUANTITY: 1 - See the other Rare WWII ordnance and training photos and that I have listed from Sergeant Osborne. ITEM(S): original US Army ordnance 8x10 photo from Camp Santa Anita, California, showing a recognition model of 3" Anti-Aircraft Gun. Used for tactical situations on sand tables and recognition training of troops and pilots. THE CAMP: Camp Santa Anita, Arcadia, California was originally a racing facility. In early 1942 it was converted into an Assembly Center for intered Japanese Americans. Later in 1942 until early 1944 it was used as the Ordinance Training Center by the US Army. Men were trained in weapons and equipment. Camp Santa Anita even had a mock German town named "Annadorf" where troops trained in taking a German village in house to house fighting under actuall LIVE machine gun fire overhead, explosions going on all around them, and simulated booby-traps. Camp Santa Anita staff served as the defending Germans and referees. After January 1944 Camp Santa Anita became a POW camp for German prisoners from the Afrika Korps captured in North Africa. SIZE: 8" x 10" DATE: circa 1942-1943 CONDITION: Very Good; Nice shape. BACK: stamped, "TRAINING DIVISION, O.T.C." with a typed paper tag identifying the weapon system shown in the photo. SOURCE: From the wartime collection of Staff Sergeant Addis M. Osborne, 36315296, who was Assistant Production Chief, Training Aids Section, Ordinance Training Center at Camp Santa Anita, Arcadia, California from 1942-1944. In that capacity he oversaw production of weapons models used as training aids as well as ordinance manuals for weapons and equipment. His collection of manuals and photos is largely comprised of WWII items I have not seen and cannot find anywhere else.
