Superfine fiber is what most products are made from in Peru . It is very soft. His staple length is approx 3 inches in length.
This listing is for 1 pound of fiber. This is all prime (blanket) fiber and there is no neck, leg or belly fiber included. It is raw, so it is normal to have some vegetable matter or sand in the fiber. I am a fiber artist - and personally work with all types of natural fibers - please ask any questions about our products or fiber in general.
Breeding Better Fiber Through Nutrition and Management ©
It's ALL about the fiber!!
Our Products
We sell a variety of alpaca and llama related products. Much of the items are made from fiber of our own animals, but we also get items from our co-op and trade items with other breeders in order to get a variety. We also carry other natural fibers such as merino wool, silk, and bamboo. In addition to taking care of the animals ourselves, we also do much of the crafts and all of the fiber prep. Some of our yarns are handspun and some are processed at a mill. Either way, you are guaranteed satisfaction !!
About Alpacas
Alpacas are originally from South America and are cousins to the llama and camels. They were a cherished treasure of the ancient Incan Culture because of their fine fleece. They were originally imported into the US in 1984 and have become a livestock of choice for many breeders.
Alpaca fiber is shorn off the animal like sheep (like getting a haircut), so this is a sustainable crop and no animals are harmed.
Alpacas have a curious sweet temperament and are easy to raise. If you want to learn more about Alpacas or Llamas - please look me up on the web.
There are 2 breeds of Alpacas; Huacaya and Suris. Huacayas have a Teddy Bear appearance and Suris have long lustrous locks that seem to drip off the alpaca. Although we only raise Huacayas we have many friends who raise Suris and also offer Suri related products.
Alpaca Colors/Micron Counts
Alpacas come in 22 natural colors for show purposes, but there are many hues which lie between these colors and many patterns which makes alpacas unique as a fiber producing livestock.
Alpaca is graded by Micron Count (not age) by the Alpaca Fiber Co-op of North America as well as in the mills of Peru.
Baby does not represent an animals age but rather the fineness of the fiber width. The lower the micron count, the more desirable the fiber.
- Royal Baby <20 Microns
- Baby 20 - 22.9 Microns
- Superfine 23 - 26.9 Microns
- Adult 27 - 31.9 Microns
- Strong >32
Alpacas are incredibly soft, hypoallergenic, anti-bacterial, does not retain odors, doesn't itch and is warmer than wool for the same weight. White and light fibers can be dyed into a rainbow of colors. The natural colors can also be blended into a variety of colors as well. White and black will make grey etc.
