BAKER EXCEPTIONAL MAHOGANY SERPENTINE CURVED SIDEBOARD FROM THE MID 1950’S

This splendid mahogany sideboard made by Baker Furniture in the mid-fifties came from an estate and had been well cared for. The serpentine curved sideboard in a traditional Chippendale style is banded with boxwood. Splendidly made with the finest materials, this is one of Baker’s highest quality designs.

 The mahogany itself has a wonderful interplay of light and color in its texture, as can be seen in the photographs.  This sideboard is not made from a flat ordinary piece of wood, but from carefully selected vibrant panels.

Baker’s exquisite craftsmanship is especially shown in the veneered crotch mahogany ovals on the doors that produce a different texture. Boxwood banding surrounds each drawer and door. The styling is called a serpentine front because the side doors are concave, and the front drawers are convex.  The legs are Chippendale bracket feet.

The drawers and doors open and close smoothly, and one drawer has sections set up for silver flatwear. The hardware is the original brass and in excellent condition.
 
This beautiful piece is 64 inches long and 35 ½ inches tall. It is 21 inches deep at the center, curving back to 17 ½ inches deep on sides.

It is in excellent condition up with every part working well and the brass pulls tight and clean. As with any vintage piece, there are some surface scratches on one side. There is also some slight rubbing in very small spaces on the panels of front drawers, caused by the movers, which can easily be retouched. Boxwood banding not affected.
