The two-disc ORIGINAL GOLD budget import compilation is not the ideal introduction to the Beach Boys for the curious novice--for all its flaws, the GOOD VIBRATIONS box set is still the champ--but ORIGINAL GOLD is a much better collection than one might expect.
Besides all the usual hits, ORIGINAL GOLD contains terrific lesser-known songs from all phases of the band's career, from early gems such as "The Surfer Moon" and "Ten Little Indians," to classic-era masterpieces "Wendy," "Girl Don't Tell Me," and the still-amazing "The Little Girl I Once Knew"--by far the strangest single any major band released in 1965--to underrated late-period singles such as "Getcha Back." There are no rarities, of course, and the packaging is unimaginative at best, but for what it is, ORIGINAL GOLD ain't half bad.
