THE SOUND: These are not "remastered from the original," these are the ORIGINAL recordings - 1:1 vinyl transfers to digital! FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 1) Q: Are these "vinyl rips" downloaded from the internet, such as from a torrent web site? A: NO, none of these recordings were ever downloaded from the internet. These recordings ARE actual "vinyl rips," or transfers to digital, but they are entirely done by On Vinyl. WE OWN an original vinyl copy of each and every CD recording we have produced. We have heard the rips that you can download from the net and we have created a superior no-frills alternative. "No-frills" means that we do not filter or artificially process the music AT ALL. When you download a vinyl rip, you are getting somebody else's idea of how the music should sound. The individual who uploaded the rip also, most likely, ran the music through software that "de-clicked " and "de-popped" the recording. However "light" the settings might've been, this is still destructive to the overall sound. Through no fault of the original uploader, who is doing what they think is right, YOU do not get to hear what the vinyl ACTUALLY sounded like. On Vinyl produces recordings that are one-of-a-kind, NON-FILTERED. Short of playing the actual vinyl the way it was originally released, you CANNOT get the sound or quality that On Vinyl offers - you just can't! 2) Q: Are these CD’s factory pressed aluminum, or are they burned CD-R’s? A: These CD’s are in fact burned CD-R’s on BLACK media. On Vinyl is convinced that individually, low speed burnt BLACK media not only rivals the big production, factory pressed aluminum discs, but that they are superior in sound quality (average Quality Score in Nero CD-DVD Speed is 90). Admittedly, not everyone agrees with this and both sides have their objective scientific reasons. Those for BLACK media say that the black color of the plastic (polycarbonate) simply provides better control for the laser. This means less error probability and more accurate playback. Additionally, the black color of the plastic better preserves the disc’s life span (compared to a non-black CD-R) as it protects the recorded info from UV light. Some, who don’t go along with the technical reasons, but who still prefer BLACK media, do so because of the SUPERIOR sound reproduction - and that is where all BLACK media advocates can agree. Better Bass; punchier midrange; no harsh bite; warmer sound. Those against BLACK media say that we’re wrong on every point and that we imagined the whole thing. Over the years, debates have raged and people have flamed over this issue. On Vinyl maintains that one must be a boiled frog on the RIAA lunch buffet menu, if one does not get onboard with BLACK media. 3) Q: Hey, those CD’s are just bootlegged crap, right? A: No, these CD recordings are not "bootlegged crap." These recordings ARE 1st generation, in-house, pristine 1:1 vinyl transfers from the original vinyl pressing. These are professionally engineered recordings. All of us here at On Vinyl are avid fans of this music and we've all been involved in making/recording music since 1983. Our staff includes a professional musician who understands the technical aspects, the theory and performance of music. This is crucial for evaluation of the source material. On Vinyl also employs an expert graphic arts team to fulfill all visual needs. The On Vinyl lab only approves and produces a recording package after vigorous testing.
