As the new incarnation of the Dead, The Other Ones face high hopes from 'heads, with Jerry gone and Bill Kreutzman absent and all. Once you get past the fact that this isn't really a Dead album, you'll be free to enjoy THE STRANGE REMAIN for the sweet chunk of kick-ass jamming that it is. The new band is a vibrant combination of original members Weir, Lesh and Hart and other veterans of the scene like Bruce Hornsby. The material, which was recorded at the 1998 Furthur Festival, offers a satisfying variety of '70s favorites, psychedelic classics and several new tunes.
Disc one opens with "St. Stephen/The Eleven," the songs made famous on LIVE DEAD that 'heads have yearned to hear for over a decade. They won't be disappointed--the combination of Phil's endearingly homely singing and Dave Ellis' saxophone is a pleasure. The funky "Estimated Prophet" is as much a revelation as ever, with hot contributions from the Steve Kimock/Mark Karan guitar team, which strikes a hip balance between Jerry-phrasing and their own blues-rockisms throughout for a satisfying brew of old and new.
