Luis Muñoz, composer, arranger and percussionist, was born in San José, Costa Rica. Coming from a very musical family, Luis spent his youth performing in Rock and Jazz groups. In 1972 Luis entered the University of Costa Rica and the National Music Conservatory, where he studied both Architecture and Music. In 1974 Luis immigrated to the United States where he completed his degree in music composition at the University of California, Santa Barbara, under the tutelage of renown British composer Peter Fricker. For the last 35 years Luis Muñoz has written music for documentaries, animation films, dance and theater. In addition, Muñoz has worked as a music producer, arranger or percussionist for numerous artists such as Airto Moreira, Etta James, Flora Purím and Jim Messina and has performed in some of the best Jazz festivals and venues in the world.

In 1980, commissioned by the Costa Rican government, Muñoz wrote and recorded "COSTA RICA-COSTA RICA", donating all the proceeds generated by the sales of that recording to the Red Cross in Nicaragua, a nation at the time desperately trying to heal itself from the effects of a devastating civil war. In 1988 he signed with CBS Records and recorded "LA VERDAD". In 1996, Fahrenheit Records "THE FRUIT OF EDEN", co-produced by Dominic Camardella (who has helmed several projects for Charles Lloyd and Maynard Ferguson,), marked Muñoz's U. S. recording debut, an explosive introduction to a talent that had been wowing Latin America for years. In 1998, Muñoz brought listeners a more progressive and exotic expression on his next endeavor, "COMPASSION", continuing to evolve as an innovative force in instrumental music.

In 2004 Muñoz released "VIDA" which received the acclaim of the music media worldwide. Among many accolades, DownBeat magazine gave it 4 stars, it was pronounced "Best Latin Jazz CD of the Year" by Jazzreview.com, "A truly Monumental Work" by Americas Magazine, "A Masterpiece" by world renowned music critic Mark Holston (Hispanic Magazine) and "One of the 10 best recordings of the year" by Latin Jazz Network. In 2006 Mr. Muñoz was given an ACAM award in Costa Rica, for Jazz Composer/Producer of the year.

In 2007 Mr. Muñoz released "Of Soul and Shadow", a collection of 10 compositions that explore his Central American roots through the idioms of Costa Rican folklore, classical music and jazz. "Of Soul and Shadow" features the collaborative efforts of over 25 musicians, including special guests Adolfo Acosta (Tower of Power) on trumpet; percussionist Ramses Araya (Ruben Blades); chromatic harmonica player Ron Kalina; trombone player Ira Nepus (Diana Krall); and New York sensation Dave Binney on alto sax. Once again, Muñoz’s music received the approval of the international press: "This recommended album rocks hard while highlighting the cultural background that makes Latin Jazz the emotional tool that has captured our heart and soul. This one brings out the goose bumps!" (Jim Santella/ LA Jazz Scene). "Delightful release, highly recommended!" (Jazzreview.com). "Latin Jazz at its best!" Four Stars (****)" (EJazznews). "Top Five Latin, Blues and Beyond CDs of 2007" (Jazzhouse.org).

And now, Luis Muñoz returns with his newest project, “Invisble”, feauturing once again David Binney, (winner of both Downbeat Critics’ and Readers’ polls, 2007), on alto sax, Jonathan Dane on trumpet, plus special vocal appearances by the wonderful Guyanan singer Lois Mahalia and by Brazilian sensation Téka. With this new project, Luis Muñoz confirms his place as a music visionary, and as one of the today’s most sensitive, melodic and talented Jazz composers.

I am an eBay power seller and lifelong record collector who has been selling collectible vinyl on eBay for over 9 years. I pride myself in grading accurately and conservatively and only deal in original, U.S. press releases unless otherwise indicated. I DO NOT deal in modern re-issues. Please bookmark our auctions for a steady stream of uncommon L.P.s and 45s and genre classics in uncommonly high-grade condition.

GRADING GUIDE

STILL SEALED (SS) Still factory sealed and in store-like condition. Any stickers or noticeable flaws will be mentioned.

MINT (M): Perfect! This record looks like it has just left the manufacturer, with NO flaws regardless of age. No wear to the cover or record period!

NEAR MINT (NM) or alternately (M-) : It is only upon close inspection that imperfections can be spotted or that this record shows evidence of having been played. It may be a sleeve rub from having been slipped in and out of its protective sleeve or an errant short mark or two or maybe an isolated scuff. These minor scuffs or rubs should not affect play. COVER: The outer packaging looks close to perfect with only minor signs of wear and or age. Inserts are not missing and will also be near mint. Minor impressions that do not break the color to the cover (due to the outer edge of the vinyl resting inside) may be acceptable, the cover artwork is near perfect as is the slick on the reverse.

EXCELLENT or (EX) : The "collector's condition" : everything has been done right by way of playing, storing and handling this record and it shows. Record still retains most all of its gloss. May show minor scuffs, blemishes, and superficial scratches under direct light. COVER: Artwork is still close to perfect but allow for some light creasing or wear. Some impression to the cover (minor outer ring wear) but no ink wear! Some slight creases to the corners, but not wrinkled or obtrusive to the eye. The corners can show minor bumping and the edges modest shelf wear. No seam splits, writing on cover or repairs can make this grade.

VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+) : a used but well cared for record with minimal flaws. The vinyl still has a great luster but light scratches, scuffs and sleeve marks will be noticeable to the naked eye. Surface noise will be minimal to none in this grade and for the sake of trade, anything affecting sound playback should be noted. COVER: The record's packaging should be clean, flat and retain some original luster. There will be perceptible signs of age and storage wear. Some minor wear to the seams or spine, but no tears or full thru splits. The corners may be bumped or slightly rounded yet no crackly bends, defacing the artwork. White paper may be somewhat yellowed from age but no water stains or mildew allowed. The jacket or label may have small marks or writing which should be noted. Covers should have no more than 2 of the flaws mentioned to earn VG+ grade.

VERY GOOD (VG): With this grade and those that follow, we are in USED record territory. From here on down, looks are secondary to SOUND. That is to say, that at this point most collectors are more interested in what the record SOUNDS like over what it looks like. Surface noise in the lead-in and during quiet passages is the hallmark of a VG record. Looks can vary widely; a VG record may look handled and dull even showing some groove wear or it may look clean and retain trace luster, it will STILL play very good, which is to say, more music than noise. With LPs in particular, this record has been played numerous times as evidenced by many light scratches, scuffs and often a mis-shapen spindle hole. COVER: VG covers will look worn, used. There may be some seam splitting. There will be some ring wear, where the ink on the color slick has begun to wear off. There may be some writing on the cover (still, no Large letters in magic marker). It may look aged and yellowish due to environmental contamination.

VERY GOOD MINUS (VG-) Having the qualities of a VG record but also showing evidence of having been abused somewhat. Little to no luster, damage to the label and other non-playing surfaces often seen such as edge warps and writing on label but all still noted. Sound really starts to suffer in this condition. Aside from low-level surface noise and/or crackling this record may also have clicks or pops from some scratches deep enough to be felt; their extent should be noted. In this grade, dynamics and loudness are often a saving grace allowing the music to overpower surface noise but this is not always the case with soft music. COVER: The cover has lengthy seam splits on two or more sides. The cover art is starting to look "snowy" from color loss. Scribbling, doodles, heavy ring wear, indentations, bumps and creases may all be present.

GOOD (G) This grade is found more often in 45s than LPs and is reserved as a ?filler? (an example until a better one can be found) for particularly rare records. A Good record will look all played-out, dull and grayish. The record may have distracting surface noise such as crackle that is continuous or hiss in parts but the music should still dominate over noise and play all the way through without skipping (repeating.) Any instance where the needle jumps or skips must be clearly pointed out and noted in the description. Should the needle jump or skip There may be some loss of dynamic sound caused by groove wear. Defects such as torn or water-damaged labels are not uncommon and other defects such as an edge chip which does not affect the play are also permissible. COVER: A Good cover will have just about everything wrong with it. It will have seam splits (possibly taped repaired, but only with scotch tape) Creases, bends, bumps and dog eared. May have magic marker writing on the cover. In essence, the cover will look very weak, but the artwork will still be recognizable.
