Interesting first edition 1897 book whose title kind of gives away the basic attitude of the thing: RELIGIONS OF PRIMITIVE PEOPLES. But pretty much EVERYONE in Victorian times referred to aboriginal cultures as “primitive.” Chapters include: The Scientific Study of Primitive Religions, The Origin and Contents of Primitive Religions, Primitive Religious Expression: In the Word….In the Object…. In the Rite, The Lines of Development of Primitive Religions. I notice one little subheading states “Pagan Religions Not Wholly Bad”!....
RELIGIONS OF PRIMITIVE PEOPLES, Daniel Garrison Brinton, New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1897. 5.5 x 8 inches. 264 pages, plus several pages of ads. Maroon cloth covers. Exterior spine joints were weak. I repaired them with strips of dyed Japanese art paper. Color match not exact, but hinges are now solid. The whole process is reversible, as I used wheat paste glue. Japanese art paper rear inner hinge repair. Ex-library book, with standard marks resulting. Tight binding. Condition: good…
