*THIS for PLANS* Not a KIT or MODEL Drawings MERCEDE S
BENZ F1 W196 By WALKDEN FISHER AFTER
a period of 15 years,
which
included those of World War II, Mercedes-Benz
reappeared in
the Grandes Epreuves
with
revolutionary fully streamlined cars
for the 1954 French
Grand Prix
held
at Rheims. The re-entry of this
famous marque
into the Grand Prix arena
had been keenly
awaited by followers of
motor sport, and
although the "Silver
Arrows",
as they
were often called,
raced for
only two seasons, 1954 and 1955, they
undoubtedly almost completely
dominated
every race in which they
competed with few
exceptions.
The
Teutonic thoroughness of their design and preparation coupled
with the organising ability of Alfred Neubauer,
the renowned Mercedes Racing Manager who
meticulously supervised
every
racing detail,
made the
silver cars formidable
adversaries
on any circuit. To make matters even more difficult for the opposition
there was the addition of
the
maestro Juan
Fangio as No.
1 driver, later
supported
by Britain's Stirling Moss-a
combination hard to beat! In 1954
Mercedes-Benz
used
two types
of car
in Grand Prix races; both were
known as the
Type W.l96. The fully-streamlined
bodywork as used in the French Grand Prix was not practical
for all circuits and
an alternative body with all four
wheels
completely
exposed was therefore developed. These open wheeled cars
first appeared in the German Grand
Prix
(Grand Prix d'Europe)
of 1954 held on the
Nurburgring,
Fangio winning with KarI Kling bringing home
another Mercedes in
fourth place. Many
authorities regarded the
new version of the W.196 as a distinctly
unhandsome vehicle, but
despite what the
connoisseurs
of line may think, the low,
squat
form of
the car has
an undeniably purposeful appearance
and was obviously designed for the
job in
hand. SCALE
