Personnel includes: George Jones, Tammy Wynette (vocals); The Jordanaires, The Nashville Edition (background vocals). Originally released on Epic (31719). Digitally remastered by Steve Hoffman. When George Jones and Tammy Wynette married in 1969, they forged a musical partnership that proved much more durable than their marriage. Despite their well-publicized battles that ended in a 1975 divorce, the two continued to churn out hit records until 1980. As with most popular country acts, a gospel record was inevitable. In 1972, Jones and Wynette released the album WE LOVE TO SING ABOUT JESUS, which was reissued by Razor and Tie Records in 1996. WE LOVE TO SING ABOUT JESUS abounds in the type of up-tempo two-steps often heard on Sunday morning evangelical television programs. While each of the numbers has its own strengths, there is a sameness to these songs. Better are the two ballads. "Old Fashioned Singing" quotes "I'll Fly Away" and other standards of the genre; "He Is My Everything" is a rewrite of the Jack Greene tear-jerker "There Goes My Everything." Jones and Wynette sing marvelously, although ironically they sound more inspired on their secular records. Maybe at this point in their lives, the lying-and-cheating, drinking-and-crying songs hit a little closer to home.
