One day in August of 1807, a large crowd of people gathered along the banks of the Hudson River to witness the start of the historic voyage of Robert Fulton's steamboat, the Clermont, from New York City to Albany.  The Clermont belched forth smoke and fire, frightening the onlookers who lined the river banks.  The Clermont heralded the beginning of a new era in transportation.  With it, the age of the steamboat arrived.
