Few trials aroused such public interest as that of John George Haigh at Lewis Assizes before Mr. Justice Humphreys in 1949. Despite a number of alleged murders, Haigh was only charged with one -- that of Mrs. Durrand-Deacon whose body he tried to destroy in a vat of acid.
