Offering an extremely rare authentic antique 19th century 1860-90 mercury silvered glass footed compote, made in Bohemia, free blown and molded technique in a classic open shape, with very rare blue etching, original seal, and in excellent condition as shown! This compote was made from Bohemian crystal soda lime glass, and measures an unusual 5" open top diameter and 5" tall!
What is rare and unusual is the blue coloration, condition and shape, as well as the unique oval banding and stylized decoration!
THIS IS A RARE TO FIND MUSEUM QUALITY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE BOHEMIAN SILVERED MERCURY GLASS COMPOTE IN NEAR MINT CONDITION!!
Silvered glass, known as Mercury glass, was first made in Haida Novy Bor which is Bohemia, now the Czech Republic, where many companies produced the ware. In fact, most mercury glass found today is Bohemian in origin in spite of listings I see to the contrary.
The condition is excellent with
NO DAMAGE THAT I CAN SEE OR FEEL!
You can rest assured that this outstanding compote is TRULY antique, and over 140 years old!
In addition to Bohemia, silvered glass was made in England, produced by Varnish Thomson and Co. and in the United States, made in the greater Boston area circa 1855-70. The American and English silvered glass was made of heavy flint or lead glass, so the idea that all mercury glass is 'light-weight' is, of course, a misnomer.
I discuss all the nuances of the ware in my own book, the "PICTORIAL GUIDE TO SILVERED MERCURY GLASS," for sale everywhere.
The piece has NO DAMAGE THAI I CAN SEE OR FEEL!
THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING QUALITY AUTHENTIC HAND BLOWN MOLDED 19TH CENTURY MERCURY SILVERED GLASS FOOTED COMPOTE!
For German speaking people, the term for this glass is Bauernsilber translated roughly into "farmers silver." There were several companies making silvered glass, including Hugo Wolf, and Bohemian silvered glass was made from more light-weight non-flint or non-lead glass.
Silvered glass was blown double walled free blown then molded, and further shaped by marvering, then filled with a solution containing silvered nitrate, heated then sealed. Bohemia, now the Czech Republic, and Germany, made silvered art glass table pieces, vase and figures from around the 1840's through the 1920's. Very rare silvered glass was also made in England by Varnish or Thomson & CO. London!
The bottom as shown has a large seal in the pontil scar original to the piece!
