For those who are new to e-Bay, I am pointing out that this is a "Fixed Price" auction and the price will NOT go up or down during the duration of the auction.  So, "Buy It Now" as the price will not get any better and it sure is a great price, the lowest price on e-Bay.  This price will not hold for long.

American Optical has been making high quality eyewear in Massachusetts for over 130 years and the Original Pilot sunglasses for the military since 1958.  AO is the originator and the largest manufacturer of this style of sunglasses.  AO has manufactured sunglasses for tens of thousands of military aviators, including the flight crew of Apollo 11, the first men to walk on the moon.

These sunglasses are the real thing.  I should know as I have been wearing this style from this manufacturer since 1972 and I am a retired Marine Corps Officer.  After retirement I became an authorized American Optical distributor and sell only U.S. manufactured, new and in the box AO product, the same as I wore on active duty.  The rugged and sturdy structure and the high quality finishing of the metal alloy frame coupled with distortion free, toughened and polished "True Color®" glass lenses have made these sunglasses the standard against which all others are compared.  These sunglasses provide 100% UV A/B protection.  They are engineered to rigid military specifications and have been issued to soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen for over 50 years.  These are performance tested sunglasses with classic aviator styling.  The lenses are neutral grey and 52mm across (5 1/8 inches between the temple hinge screws) or 57mm across (5 5/8 inches between the temple hinge screws).  If you are taller than 6' 1" or have a very wide head, I recommend that you purchase the 57mm size.  You may also select the metal alloy frame color in GOLD, SILVER (shiny finish), BLACK or MATTE CHROME (dull finish).  The standard military issue is a Gold or Silver frame color.  Bayonet temples afford easy-on and easy-off when wearing a helmet or headphones.  Exactly what a pilot demands.

They come NEW and never worn, in a carry case marked with the American Optical logo and are packaged in a factory sealed box suitable for wrapping and gift giving.  A one year American Optical warranty is also included.

Do not be misled by counterfeits, look-a-likes or used military surplus.  Genuine AO military pilot sunglasses have the AO logo stamped into the outside of the temple piece just behind the hinge on both sides.  The AO sunglasses approved for use by the military do NOT have an AO logo stenciled on the left lens as this would obstruct the vision of the pilots.  Others make sunglasses that are similar to but not American Optical - Original Pilot sunglasses.  There has been only one manufacturer of Original Pilot sunglasses since 1958 and American Optical and only American Optical is the one.

I encourage you to read my feedbacks so you will understand the very high quality of the sunglasses being auctioned and the speed at which they will be shipped to you, anywhere in the world.  To date, I have shipped to almost all of the United States and international customers in Canada, England, Malta, Northern Ireland, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Greece, Netherlands, France, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Scotland, Spain, Austria, Romania, Switzerland, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Israel, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Portugal, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, China, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Korea and Japan.

The sunglasses will ship in a crush resistant corrugated box.  The quality of the packaging has been the subject of numerous positive feedbacks.  I have sold many of these sunglasses and never had any reported as damaged.  For delivery within the U.S., delivery confirmation is included in the cost.

Due to issues of public health, I sell sunglasses that have never been worn and are new in a factory sealed box.  Therefore, returns are NOT accepted.

The "Buy it Now" price of $36 is a great priceIt is the LOWEST price on e-Bay.  The manufacturer's suggested retail price is $70 plus shipping.  The street price is usually at the $55+ range when civilians can even find them.  You may want to consider purchasing more than one pair to keep on the shelf until needed.  Never again be looking for a last minute gift.  These sunglasses are ideal for birthdays, graduations, employee incentives and gift giving.  Think about CHRISTMAS.  Each pair is factory fresh.

The below edited article was written by Lt. David M. Kennedy (USN), VA-27, appearing in APPROACH Magazine, September 1984.  My thanks to Lt. Kennedy and the Navy Safety Center for the availability of this article.  I commend it to your reading as it details the superior performance of the American Optical “Original Pilots Sunglasses.”

BETTER GET RID OF THE CHEAP SUNGLASSES, DILBERT! (c)

The only sunglasses authorized for in-flight wear by Navy aircrews are the familiar Original Pilots Sunglasses, introduced in 1958 by American Optical and equipped with neutral gray lenses that block all but 1-18 percent of the ambient light.  Neutral gray lenses are stipulated because they don't distort or change colors as most colored lenses do.  All things considered, the Original Pilots Sunglasses is an excellent pair of sunglasses.  Polarized lenses are specifically not authorized for in-flight wear due to the possibility of blind spots caused by the cumulative polarizing of canopy/windscreen, visor and sunglass lenses.  Photochromatic lenses are not authorized in-flight because they are not considered dark enough, even at their darkest, to provide adequate protection.  Lenses whose changing density depends upon the UV ray are also hampered by the canopy's absorption of UV rays.

Although aviators from Randolph Airfield in Texas to aircraft carriers at sea are encouraged to shun commercially obtainable sunglasses in favor of the Original Pilots Sunglasses, a simple glance around any Naval Air Station will show a wide variety of sunglasses, most of which are excellent.  Some, unfortunately, don't provide the wearer with adequate protection and may be potentially dangerous.  By filtering out glare and by tinting the lens, some substandard sunglasses allow your natural squinting impulse to relax and your pupils to dilate.  As a result, your eyes become susceptible to retina-damaging IR and UV radiation.
