Butterflies, along with their close relatives the moths, are insects. Together, they are the most numerous type of insect. The butterfly belongs to the order of insects called Lepidoptera. Insects that are in the Lepidoptera order have four wings and these wings are covered with scales. Butterflies, which also are considered the most beautiful of all insects, are often compared to flowers as both are very delicate and sensitive.

Peru is known as one of the countries with the highest biological diversity on the planet. Therefore, it is not surprising that Peru be the home of at least 3,700 species of butterflies, what is equal to 20% of the world total (18000 species), more than the 3,607 species counted in all of sub-equatorial Africa. Running a very close second are Colombia, Brazil and Ecuador (3200), further along lies Venezuela (2300), Australia (396), Europe (441), or North America (679).
In the National Park of the Manu in the Peruvian forest (Brazil-Peru border) for example, they have been found more than 1,300 species, in an area of only 10000 acres. In a smaller area, in the Reserved Area of Tambopata-Candamo, 1,260 species have been collected to date. Important species are found in Peru from genera such as Morpho (M. sulkowski, M. absoloni, M. cacica, M. achilles), Agrias (A. beata, A. claudina, A. excelsior), Papilio (P. xantopleura, P. cacicus), Parides (P. phosphorus, P. phalaeucus) besides others.

In Peru and other places, the greatest threat to the survival of butterflies is the degradation and destruction of their habitat.

A common misconception is that the collection of butterflies for scientific, educative, or commercial purposes is highly damaging and can lead to the extinction of a species. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is absolutely no scientific evidence that these activities have provoked the extinction of any species of butterfly.

On the other hand, there is ample evidence that the destruction of habitat by human intervention has been the principal factor in the disappearance of various species of butterflies from the face of the Earth.

Our goal is to deliver to our customers the most beautiful Peruvian butterflies without damaging the environment and to help to avoid the degradation of the habitat of these colorful and amazing insects.
