The Cubs set includes 4 Hall of Famers and 6 Rookie cards. Ferguson Jenkins fits both categories. With 9 special cards, the set is pricier, even ungraded, than the teams performance justifies. It has “firsts” and “lasts.” It is the first time we see the Beckert-Kessinger Keystone duo. It is the last time baseball sees Roberts and Simmons on the same pitching staff.
Baseball objective: Reflect the Roster with historical accuracy. Certain players are statistically essential. Completing the Roster relies on the Collector’s judgment. Owners may decide to disagree, adjusting the set accordingly. For the 1966 Cubs:
Essential Hitters (12): C-Randy Hundley, 1B-Ernie Banks (HOF), 2B-Glenn Beckert, 3B-Ron Santo, SS-Don Kessinger, LF-Byron Browne, CF-Adolfo Phillips, RF-Billy Williams (HOF), John Boccabella, George Altman, Lee Thomas, Jim Stewart.
Essential Pitchers (9): Dick Ellsworth*, Ken Holtzman, Bill Hands, Ernie Broglio, Curt Simmons, Robin Roberts (HOF), Bob Hendley, Ferguson Jenkins (HOF), Cal Koonce.
Others included (4): Hitters – Chris Krug, John Herrnstein; Pitcher – Ted Abernathy; Other-Team card.
That adds up to 25, but there are only 24 cards in the set. That is because Hundley and Hands appear on the same Rookie Card.
*The 1966 Dick Ellsworth card is an “error” card. The picture on it is really the Late Ken Hubbs. I excluded the card from this set, because it is not an accurate illustration of the historic Cubs. I used the 1965 Ellsworth card instead.
Merging baseball and card collecting in this manner can require compromises.
Compromises in this set: Some players have cards showing them in other uniforms, because they were acquired by trade: Phillips, Thomas, Simmons, Roberts, Jenkins, Herrnstein. One player had no card that year, so his 1967 card was included: Holtzman. While Hundley and Hands are on the same Rookie card, a number of players appear on Rookie Cards that show player not relevant to this collection: Browne, Boccabella, Jenkins. Finally, Thomas and Abernathy were traded for one another. While each played enough for Chicago to justify their inclusion, they were not on the Roster at the same time.
Card Collecting objective: Quality. Offer ungraded cards presentable for illustrating baseball history, i.e. cards that I would be willing to give as a gift to a friend.
The seller is an avid baseball fan and an amateur card collector. I would not presume to offer a learned-sounding evaluation of the cards. I catalog them and offer the few observations I have made, if any. I present pictures of the cards, unadjusted, so that you can make your own observations. I show the backs of cards when I think there is reason to do so. In this set, I show the back of the Santo card. The front looks fine, but the back has a pretty significant centering problem.

Judge for yourself!
I see a few soft corners.
I triple checked the premium cards – they are presentable.
My comments on Premium cards are based strictly on my own buying observations. They are always to be modified according to card quality. I hope they will provide a basis for rough price comparison. In this set, there are a number of cards that I would not call premium, but which are not common either, e.g. Kessinger RC.
Premium cards in the set: Banks, Santo, Williams, Roberts, Jenkins RC, Simmons.
Catalog of cards: cards are 1966 Topps, unless otherwise noted.
